The weather was perfect, the ground was cleared, the shed had arrived, and three men, myself, my brother Ben and a family friend, Peter, were prepared to put in some elbow exercise.
It had arrived a few days previously, and had sat patiently on the grass in its yellow plastic. |
With the ground bearers down, and the first logs stacked, the shape of things to come is evident. |
Log by log the shed comes together. The windows and doors fit perfectly into the pre-cut holes. |
The tongue-and-groove roof boards needed to be nailed into place. By the end of the day we had run out of nails twice and my hand couldn't hold a hammer. |
As the day ends, the floorboards are brought in one by one and pushed into place. |
The next day the outside of the shed was treated with preservative, then the roof was boarded and felted. The day after that the floor was taken up and relaid. A second coat of preservative was applied. Finally, yesterday, two weeks and one day after the project was started, the finishing touches were put on the shed.
