Beomeosa temple, founded in 678, is the most beautiful temple I've seen so far in Korea. Despite being located a short bus-ride from Busan, Korea's second city, the setting gives the impression of being a million miles away from civilisation.
Cheonwangmun, the second gate of the temple, contains four large wooden guardians. Each holds their own accessory - a sword, a guitar, a dragon and a spear. Worshippers bow to each guardian when passing through the gate. |
The belfry, called Mireukjeon, contains not only a large bell and a large drum, but also the temple gift-shop. |
Jijangjeon hall, one of a number of worship halls scattered throughout the temple. The ornate eaves are typical of temple construction and decoration throughout Korea. |
Statues and pictures of the Buddha grace the insides of the halls of the temple. Monks and worshippers gather to chant ( audio - 268Kb). |
