English Teachers Playing Tennis

Semi-Random Babblings

A day off had presented itself in the form of Korean National Foundation day. Steve decided to organise a tennis tournament for the ECC teachers. We planned to meet at 10am, but due to going out the night before, Marc was the only one who was there on time. Indeed, he was early. This is what he looked like when I arrived. He'd been there for at least 30 minutes.

Eventually, at about 10:45, everyone was here, and eager to get involved with the tennis.

Steve organised us into our groups. We played a straight knock-out tournament, first to win two games. Roxane and Stacey teamed to played doubles against singles.

We were playing at KAIST, a hard-court venue with excellent facilities for both the players and the spectators. Here's a picture of the grandstand:

My first game was against Liam, who had only had an hour or so sleep. On any other day I would have been demolished, I feel, but I managed to scrape through my games, confusing him with my under-arm (and he claimed downright underhand) serves. This was no particular strategy, rather the lack of over-arm serve ability. Following Liam, I played Jen. We hit deuce so many time I lost count, and I think I was lucky to come through to the final. Her serve was blistering.

For the final, Liam took the umpire's seat and presided over the match. He came out with a lot of funny comments, and threatened to remove the spectators if they didn't stop laughing at him

I think I managed to get about four or five points over the course of the three games we played, but finished with a whitewash. Steve claims not to be a great tennis player, and while I would agree with him to a point, he didn't lose a single game.
